CONNX Data Integration Suite 14.9.0 Implementation

Full implementation of Software AG's CONNX Data Integration Suite to connect ADABAS applications and databases with modern reporting, BI and development tools, eliminating manual extraction processes and data duplication.

The Challenge

  • The organization needed to expose data from its ADABAS applications to business teams and modern platforms (reporting, analytics, office tools) without replicating information or altering transactional systems.
  • Existing processes relied on manual batch extractions to flat files, with data latency of up to 24 hours and high maintenance costs.
  • A solution with real-time access, centralized access governance and compliance with mainframe security policies was required.

The Solution

  • Design and implementation of CONNX Data Integration Suite 14.9.0 in a high-availability architecture, with native ADABAS connectors deployed across production, pre-production and development environments.
  • CONNX metadata catalog configuration: relational schemas over ADABAS files, access optimization by ISN and descriptor, and data type mapping.
  • Data published via ODBC and JDBC for consumption by reporting and BI tools, with integrated security (role-based authentication and authorization) and full access traceability.
  • Technical staff training, operations documentation and hands-on support during go-live and service stabilization.

Results

Real-time
Access to ADABAS data with no latency, eliminating 24-hour batch extractions
0 replicas
No data duplication: consumers access the source directly
Standard SQL
ODBC/JDBC for any reporting, BI or office tool
Security
Role-governed access with full traceability

Adabas and Natural Upgrade to Linux Platform

Full upgrade of Software AG ADABAS and Natural products with migration to Linux platform: current supported versions, security patches applied and 100% of objects and data migrated and verified, with no business disruption.

The Challenge

  • The installed ADABAS and Natural versions had reached end of support: no security patches available and a growing risk of uncorrectable incidents.
  • The existing proprietary platform made maintenance expensive and limited flexibility, so the decision was made to migrate to Linux servers without losing objects or data.
  • The applications supported 24x7 critical processes: any error during the upgrade meant a business outage with direct impact.

The Solution

  • Prior environment audit: full inventory of Natural objects (FUSER), ADABAS files, users, batch jobs and application dependencies.
  • Phased upgrade plan with pre-production environment: installation of Adabas 7.4 and Natural 9.3 on Linux, library conversion and validation, and object compatibility checks.
  • Controlled migration of data and objects, regression and performance testing, and go-live within a planned maintenance window with rollback procedure.
  • Training for the internal team on the new platform and delivery of complete operations and administration documentation.

Results

Minimal downtime
Go-live within a planned window with no loss of data or objects
Active support
Products updated with security patches and official support
Linux
Modern, flexible platform with lower maintenance costs
Zero losses
100% of Natural objects and data migrated and verified

Software AG Products Administration

Administration and maintenance service for a manufacturing company's Software AG environments: stable and up-to-date environments, incidents resolved under SLA, complete documentation and knowledge transfer to the internal team.

The Challenge

  • The production Software AG environment lacked internal resources specialized in ADABAS, Natural and EntireX.
  • Outdated versions and patches, with no environment documentation and no defined procedures for maintenance or incidents.
  • Recurring incidents that impacted operations and were resolved without formal diagnosis or prevention plan.

The Solution

  • Proactive administration service: installation, configuration and maintenance of ADABAS, Natural and EntireX across production, pre-production and development environments.
  • Patch and version management with a maintenance calendar and pre-validation in pre-production before applying changes to production.
  • Environment monitoring with early incident detection, formal diagnosis and resolution under a service level agreement.
  • Complete environment documentation, operational procedures and knowledge transfer to the internal team.

Results

Stable environment
Sustained availability with incidents resolved under SLA
Up to date
Versions and security patches updated
Planned
Maintenances with low-impact windows and prior testing
Documented
Procedures and knowledge transferred to the team

Adabas Database Management, Backups and Software Transfers

Full management of a public administration's ADABAS databases: backup policy implemented and verified, restore procedures tested with measured times, and software and object transfers between environments controlled and traceable.

The Challenge

  • Critical databases with no defined backup policy and no periodically tested restores.
  • Software and object transfers between environments performed manually, without traceability, version control or audit.
  • Real risk of data loss in the event of incidents, with unknown recovery times and no contingency plan.

The Solution

  • Definition and implementation of a backup policy using Adabas native utilities, with defined retentions and off-site copies.
  • Restore procedure tested periodically, with measured and documented recovery times (RTO).
  • Automated, traceable software and object transfers between environments, with version control, audit log and verified deployments.
  • Database monitoring and periodic review of the recovery plan with restore simulations.

Results

Safe backups
Verified copies with defined retention and off-site copy
Tested restores
Recovery validated periodically with known RTO
Traceable transfers
Controlled and audited deployments between environments
Zero losses
No data lost since the service was implemented

z/OS Mainframe to Linux Migration

Complete migration of an Adabas/Natural system from a z/OS mainframe to Linux servers: Natural download and adaptation to the new environment, Adabas file download with EBCDIC/ASCII conversion, JCL transformation into Shell/Python scripts and full operational verification.

The Challenge

  • The z/OS mainframe accumulated license, maintenance and staffing costs far higher than those of an open platform, with a limited platform roadmap.
  • Batch processes depended on proprietary JCLs that were hard to maintain and on staff with mainframe-specific knowledge.
  • Data resided in Adabas files in EBCDIC encoding: the migration had to guarantee full conversion without loss or corruption.

The Solution

  • Natural download from the z/OS environment and adaptation to Linux: installation on the new platform, NATPARM and buffer pool configuration, and verification of program execution in the new environment.
  • Adabas file download from z/OS and EBCDIC/ASCII conversion applying the customer-adapted code page, with data integrity validation.
  • JCL transformation into Shell/Python scripts, automating batch processes (copies, unloads and overnight jobs) in the new environment.
  • Library download via SYSTRANS and load into Linux, open source tool installation and full regression testing before go-live.

Results

Reduced cost
Open Linux platform with drastically lower license and maintenance costs
Automated batch
JCLs transformed into maintainable, auditable Shell/Python scripts
Intact data
Validated EBCDIC/ASCII conversion with no data loss
Zero disruption
Planned go-live with complete regression testing
